My last name 'Liepins' means Little Linden Tree in Latvian
My artwork is sensory, often meditative, depicting emotional landscapes and inviting interactive encounters. Working in mixed-media, I combine layers of dance and movement, poetry and utterances, with film and photographs to explore layers of meaning across time and geography.
My art practice is something I strive to 'make my every day’. Repetitive actions such as daily walks and dream journals or collecting visual impressions with my mobile phone generates material with which to reveal the subtle, ‘underneath’. This subtle realm of life is evoked through a sensitive attunement to environments, relational dynamics and my own inner experience.
Dream Cartography as a Palatte for the Imagination
Dream cartography appeals to me because it proposes the possibility that you can go within and explore, and map your own path. It is a tool that allows you to grow within, so that you have something to offer in the world. (We usually try to do it the other way around).
I'm thinking (writing) out loud here. I think perhaps this is a proposal, an emerging hypothesis, an avenue for exploration and adventure. I have been practicing dreaming since the winter of 2015. You could also call it having visions, certainly it is a visual and visionary process, but unfortunately 'dream' and 'vision' and 'imaginary' are all very problematic words. I am talking about something real, if it helps, you can call it a language.
